Our offices are open 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM Monday through Friday. We are closed on weekends and Holidays. Please see the Contacts and Locations section for each specific office location.
Insurance
Harris & Smith Obstetrics and Gynecology works closely with our patients and a broad range of insurance carriers to facilitate the reimbursement process. We will file insurance claims for you if required by your insurance plan. For our Medicare and HMO/PPO patients, we accept the contracted payment for our fees, excluding your deductible and co-payment (if applicable). For private pay patients, we require that you pay for your services at the time of your visit unless other arrangements have been made. For your convenience, we accept Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, and other major credit cards.
We participate with many different PPO and HMO plans as well as accepting traditional indemnity insurance. If you are not sure about our provider status with your insurance company, please check with your insurance company or with our business office.
Managed Care
Managed health care is designed to provide most routine health care through your primary care physician. Many managed care plans either allow you to select a gynecologist as your primary care physician or see a gynecologist once or twice a year for regular gynecologic exams. A recently enacted North Carolina state law stipulates the right of women enrolled in a managed health care plan to have direct access to an obstetrician/gynecologist within the plan. Please contact your health plan directly if you have questions regarding coverage of specific services.

Please inform us of the reason for your visit so we can schedule the right amount of time to see you. Routine annual examinations can be scheduled several months ahead. Our staff will send you a card to remind you of your appointment.

Inclement Weather Policy
If either or both practice locations are closed for a full day or part of a day (delayed opening or early closing) due to inclement weather, we will take the following actions to alert our patients:

- Staff will attempt to contact each patient directly by phone. However, please call the office to reschedule your appointment if we don't reach you and always call the office prior to coming in for an appointment if we are experiencing severe storms or other inclement weather.

Lab Results
Another way to connect to your health with Harris & Smith Ob-Gyn is to set up a Healthview account with Duke Medicine. This account can be used for all your appointments and care received through a Duke Health System provider. You simply provide your email address when you call to make an appointment or when you check in for an appointment. You will receive an email inviting you to create a HealthView account.
Through the HealthView account, you can access any lab or radiology report that is sent to a Duke facility (please note that Harris & Smith Ob-Gyn will use some non-Duke labs and radiology services and those results will not be available through HealthView). You can schedule an appointment, register in advance for an appointment and pay your bills. For services received through a Duke facility, a HealthView account maybe very helpful to you.

Cancellations
If you must cancel or reschedule your appointment, please call our office as soon as possible, so that we may accommodate other patients and reschedule you for a more convenient time.
Medical Records
The physicians and staff of Harris & Smith Ob-Gyn are excited to be transitioning our medical practice to an electronic medical record. We are entering all medical records for our new patients and transitioning our exisiting patients’ charts to an electronic medical record or EMR. One of the most important components of your medical record is your comprehensive medical history. In the past, you have completed this history on paper, but now you will enter your medical history into your electronic medical record using a computer. Because the electronic medical history is so vital to your medical care, the information must be entered prior to your visit. If the information is not in the electronic record prior to your visit, your appointment will have to be rescheduled. We want to avoid this inconvenience by notifying you, in advance, when the portal information must be completed and reminding you that it can take 20 to 30 minutes to complete the medical history. Our staff has been thoroughly trained on the EMR and they ready to help you. If you receive a letter or call regarding the patient portal and do not have access to a computer or you know that you will need help, call us right away so we can help you complete the portal information in advance of your appointment time.

After Hours Information
If you have an urgent medical problem after hours, please call 471-1573 (Durham) or 967-8052 (Patterson Place). Our answering service will take your phone number and brief description of the problem, so that a health care professional can return your call promptly. If you believe the situation is life-threatening, do not delay. Call 911 or go to the nearest emergency room. We will be contacted by the hospital staff.
